A Brief History...

California’s northern Sonoma and southern Mendocino County coastline is a rare example of a place steeped in an eclectic history of native american tradition, european exploration, Russian fur traders, the tug-of-war of ownership from Spain, to Mexico, to the discovery of its resources, mainly Redwood trees, and U.S. Statehood in 1850.

Even with the tumult that ushered in an industrial-sized logging boom beginning in 1851, fueled by an insatiable demand for lumber as San Francisco and the greater Bay Area grew rapidly to accommodate growth from the Gold Rush, and reconstruction following the destruction of 80% of the city of San Francisco, by fire and earthquake, in 1906, the Coast has deflected the blight of urbanization.

With some 900+ mills opened & closed in the County since 1852, that would be enough to permanently alter the landscape of most places, but here you can stand at the gate to Fort Ross and still survey the land, as far as the eye can see, virtually as it was viewed by its first inhabitants in 1841.

The mills, the schooners, and the stagecoach drivers, wary of robbers on the Gualala River Bridge, may have vanished in time, but the core natural beauty of the coast remains so well intact, that you can see and feel the history of this place just about anywhere you go.

Looking into a Dog-Hole Port, you may still see an anchoring bolt in the reef face, and easily imagine it long ago connecting a lumber schooner to the shore with a gravity chute, and carefully taking on the most intrepid humans passengers, lumber, and hogs, or view an historical photo taken from the the Mendocino Overlook at the town of Mendocino, and you will see nearly the same sight today.

Unlike so many coastal areas of California sited so close to a major metropolitan area, the unspoiled beauty of the area remains legendary, and we encourage you to come and experience it for yourself.

What others have to say...

Driftwood (Sea Ranch):

"The house is lovely--bright, spacious and airy. It was wonderful having a fireplace in the master bedroom that could be started by remote control on chilly mornings. The house is located near the Salal Trail which makes it convenient for walking, it is near Gualala which makes it convenient for shopping or eating out and it is right next to the golf course which makes it a wonderful house for golfers. Check in was easy and my family and our pup had a very relaxing time in the house."

Sea La Vie Home (Anchor Bay - Gualala):

"We've stayed here twice. It's such a fantastic rental in a beautiful area. Spotlessly clean, decent internet, well stocked kitchen, great layout."

"The house, amenities and location are perfect! There were 6 of us (3 couples) and a pup, and had plenty of space. We couldn’t have chosen a better place, and will definitely stay again. Everything exceeded our expectations"

Refuge By The Sea (Anchor Bay - Gualala):

"Magnificent! Clean, new construction, gorgeous bath and hot-tub, this house has everything and breath taken views. "

"The place is amazing, really good spot and the view is just astonishing! Definitely recommended for a gateway!"
